A Guide to Norfolk Holidays

Are you looking for information about what to do while on holiday in Norfolk? Well, if you’re visiting this eastern UK county, there are a number of different things to do and see. Whether you love the sea, want to spend time shopping, or want to see some great historical sites, Norfolk offers it all.

If you’re going to Norfolk for the beaches, you’ll find two very different types. First, the area from Sheringham to around the Wash is full of sandbanks and harbours. But if you follow the coastline from Cromer on, you’ll find that the sea is coming in more and more, leaving eroded clay cliffs. No matter which area you visit, you’ll find some nice sandy beaches. Some are remote and sparsely populated, while others have developed resorts. These beaches include Hunstanton and Old Hunstanton (a quieter beach), Holkham Bay (one of the famous locations in Norfolk), Weybourne, Cromer, Sheringham, and Mundesley.

Norfolk also has a very rich history, and this history is reflected through its many museums. You’ll find the many museums in Norfolk are varied, so you’re sure to find one that you’re interested in. If you want to learn about the life and industry of Norfolk, visit the Birdewell Museum in Norwich. It contains information on the iron foundries of Norfolk, a recreation of a pharmacy from the 1930s, and more, including a large collection of antique shoes. Strangers Hall, a nearby museum dedicated to English domestic life, is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the area. Two of the most interesting sites here are the vaulted Undercroft and the Tudor Great Hall.

Another great site to visit in Norfolk is the Norwich Castle. It was built as a Royal Palace over 900 years ago by the Normans. This museum is full of various treasures, including artwork, natural history exhibits, and architectural exhibits.

Want to get away from museums and spend some money? Norfolk has many arts and crafts centres where you can not only purchase hand-made goods but also see how they are made. Wroxham Barns, for example, features individual studies where you can watch and talk to various artists. You’ll find amazing displays of pottery, stained glass, and, of course, Norfolk cider. Sutton Pottery near Stalham is another location to see artist Malcolm Flatman work his magic at the kiln. Norwich Lanes, a section of Norwich, features many small galleries, stores, and shops that sell artwork of all kinds.

Norfolk also has several wildlife reserves, parks, and zoos. These locations are great if you’re on holiday with your kids. The Cley Nature Reserve is a great place for bird watching, as is Cley-Next-The Sea. If you’d rather see seals instead of birds, visit any of the beaches between Horsey and Winterton-on-Sea. Here, you can watch these cute sea animals sun bathing and, during the winter, watch the antics of the hundred or so pups that are born there.

Mark Smith is a travel writer for various websites and has stayed in and reviewed numerous Holiday Villages.
